Are Skyscrapers Truly Necessary or Just Ego Trips?

Skyscrapers have been poking holes in the sky since 1885. They are bold, beautiful, and sometimes a bit ridiculous. But the real question is: do we build them because we need them, or because we simply love showing off?


Skyscrapers and the City Space Problem

Cities are running out of room. Therefore, building upward makes a lot of sense. Research from Eastern Engineering Group confirms that skyscrapers maximize land use in densely packed urban areas. Moreover, they allow thousands of people to live and work in a single footprint.

Think of cities like Tokyo, New York, or Hong Kong. Without skyscrapers, these cities would have to sprawl outward. Consequently, that sprawl destroys farmland, forests, and open spaces. So, in that sense, skyscrapers actually protect the earth at ground level.

Furthermore, a 2024 study published in ScienceDirect shows that skyscrapers drive economic growth. They consolidate commercial activity in city centers. As a result, this improves urban efficiency and overall productivity.

Additionally, the study found that skyscrapers boost urban resilience. They bring diverse populations together in one place. This, in turn, strengthens communities socially and economically.


Skyscrapers and the Economy: A Tall Story Worth Telling

Money talks. And skyscrapers speak very loudly in financial terms. According to ScienceDirect’s economics synthesis, skyscraper growth since the late 1800s was driven by rising incomes and increasing urbanization.

The research goes even further. It shows that height limits in cities actually reduce urban GDP. In other words, restricting skyscrapers costs cities real money. Therefore, allowing cities to grow tall can directly improve economic output.

However, not everything adds up perfectly. A 2025 study on Chinese skyscrapers found something interesting. Local governments often subsidized skyscraper development with discounted land prices. Their goal was to encourage new urban growth. But the economic efficiency of that approach is still debated.

So, while skyscrapers can be economic powerhouses, they can also become tools for political ambition. That is a fine line between smart planning and showing off.


The Ego Factor: Taller Is Not Always Better

Let us be honest for a moment. Some skyscrapers exist purely for bragging rights. Cities and countries compete to build the tallest structure. The result is often a building that costs billions but serves very few people.

Take the Burj Khalifa as an example. It is stunning. But as Construction21 reports, it uses 4,000 tons of structural steel just for decorative purposes. That is a lot of metal for something that does not hold anything up.

Furthermore, China has actually banned very tall buildings in some areas. As noted by Parametric Architecture, these “vanity projects” were seen as wasteful. They were built to impress rather than to serve. That is a candid admission from one of the world’s biggest builders.

So, yes, the ego factor is real. Some skyscrapers exist because someone wanted to put their name on the skyline. That is not always a bad thing, but it is worth acknowledging.


Skyscrapers and the Environment: The Ugly Side of Going Up

Here is where things get complicated. Skyscrapers come with a heavy environmental price tag. Research cited by Construction21 reveals a sobering finding. Skyscrapers generate 140% more total emissions than areas with shorter buildings housing the same number of people.

That is not a small difference. That is almost double the environmental damage. Additionally, buildings already consume about 40% of global energy, 25% of water, and 40% of natural resources.

Moreover, a study from The Conversation compared high-density low-rise cities like Paris with high-density high-rise cities like New York. The findings were clear. Paris-style urban layouts are significantly more carbon efficient. Moving from a low-rise to a high-rise urban setup increases whole-life carbon emissions by about 142%.

On top of that, skyscrapers create heat islands. Tomorrow.City explains that grouping skyscrapers together traps heat in urban areas. This raises temperatures in surrounding neighborhoods. As a result, residents need more energy for cooling, which creates a damaging cycle.

Tall buildings also have serious cooling challenges internally. ResearchGate research explains that insufficient airflow between floors makes cooling very difficult. Every day, these buildings burn thousands of watts just to stay comfortable.


What Does Research Say About How Skyscrapers Make Us Feel?

Buildings shape people in ways we rarely talk about. The University of Waterloo points out that researchers are now monitoring how urban structures affect mental health and mood. Growing up in a city actually doubles the risk of developing schizophrenia. It also increases rates of depression and anxiety.

More specifically, a study highlighted by Bristol Health Partners found that exposure to high-rise buildings negatively affects emotional state. Researchers took people to locations in Central London with both low-rise and high-rise buildings. They measured emotional responses using wearable technology. The results showed that people felt worse near the tall buildings.

Furthermore, Rethinking the Future reports that blank glass facades on skyscrapers cause decreased attention and interest. Pedestrians described walking past them as bland and monotonous. That is not exactly the uplifting urban experience anyone plans for.

In addition, urbanisness.com summarizes decades of research by Professor Robert Gifford. His findings show that residents of high-rise buildings are more likely to experience mental health issues. They also have heightened fear of crime and weaker social connections. Children face greater challenges growing up in these buildings too.

So, skyscrapers might win beauty contests. But they do not always win the hearts of the people living inside them.


Skyscrapers Can Still Be Sustainable: Here Is How

Not all hope is lost. Skyscrapers are getting smarter, cleaner, and more people-friendly. For instance, Arup’s 2025 vision study imagines skyscrapers of 2050 as central to regenerating urban spaces. The focus is on human-centered design that fosters inclusion and community.

Moreover, New York City has led the charge on emissions. The Climate Mobilization Act’s Local Law 97 now requires buildings over 25,000 square feet to meet strict low-emission standards. Over 50,000 buildings in the city must reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Many are turning to carbon capture and storage technologies to comply.

Furthermore, sustainable building materials are changing the game. Construction21 highlights innovations like self-healing concrete and energy-efficient window systems. These windows can reduce energy consumption by up to 18 to 20 percent. That is a meaningful dent in a skyscraper’s massive energy bill.

In Norway, the Mjostarnet building stands 85.4 meters tall and is one of the world’s tallest timber buildings. Tomorrow.City notes that timber has a neutral or even negative carbon footprint when you account for the CO2 absorbed by trees. Therefore, the materials we build with matter as much as how tall we build.

Additionally, IntechOpen’s research on green high-rise buildings maps out a clear path toward sustainability. Integrating green infrastructure, compact city planning, and clean energy technologies into skyscraper design is no longer optional. It is becoming the new standard.


Skyscrapers Around the World: Different Reasons, Different Results

Not every city builds skyscrapers for the same reason. In some cities, the goal is purely practical. In others, it is about prestige. And sometimes, it is both.

In dense Asian cities like Hong Kong and Singapore, skyscrapers solve a genuine problem. Land is extremely scarce. Therefore, building upward is not a luxury; it is a necessity. These cities have refined the art of vertical living over decades.

In contrast, some cities in less densely populated countries have built skyscrapers mainly as status symbols. A towering skyline attracts investors and signals economic ambition. However, that ambition sometimes outpaces actual demand for the space inside.

The Vertical Urbanism Index Report 2024 by CTBUH tracks tall building completion timelines across the globe. It measures density, livability, and sustainability to help cities optimize their growth strategies. The report makes it clear that building tall is not automatically good or bad. Context matters a great deal.


The Urban Planning Challenge: Balancing Growth With Livability

Urban planners face a tough balancing act. On one side, they need to accommodate population growth. On the other side, they need to protect quality of life. Skyscrapers sit right at the center of this tension.

Eastern Engineering Group’s research recommends transit-oriented development and mixed-use zoning as tools to manage this tension. These approaches reduce traffic, improve air quality, and maintain a sense of community even in tall-building environments.

Additionally, preserving green spaces matters enormously. People need parks, trees, and open areas to thrive psychologically. Skyscrapers that take away those spaces end up damaging the very communities they were built to serve.

Furthermore, a systematic review from ScienceDirect calls for better collaboration between architects, psychologists, and urban planners. Getting the design of high-rise buildings right requires input from all these disciplines. Without that collaboration, buildings that look great on paper can fail the people inside.


Skyscrapers of the Future: Taller, Smarter, Kinder

The next generation of skyscrapers will look very different. Architects and engineers are rethinking everything from materials to energy systems to social function.

In 2024, the eVolo Skyscraper Competition reviewed 206 projects and awarded top honors to designs focused on sustainability and community. Notably, two winning projects tackled pollution directly. One repurposed physical waste, while another captured pollutants from the air.

Moreover, biophilic design is gaining traction. This approach brings nature into tall buildings through indoor gardens, natural ventilation, and living walls. As a result, residents feel more connected to the natural world even on the 50th floor.

Also, advances in structural engineering now allow for taller buildings with lighter materials. IntechOpen’s high-rise sustainability review shows a clear shift toward integrating environmental assessment tools into the design process from day one. This makes sustainability a feature, not an afterthought.

The future of skyscrapers is bright. But only if we build them with purpose and not just pride.


So, Are Skyscrapers Necessary or Just a Flex?

The honest answer is: both. Skyscrapers solve real problems in densely populated cities. They house thousands of people on a tiny piece of land. They generate economic activity. They make cities more competitive on a global stage.

But they also come with serious costs. The environmental damage is significant. The psychological toll on residents is real. And some of the tallest buildings in the world exist mainly because someone wanted to win an imaginary race to the clouds.

Therefore, the key is intention. A skyscraper built to solve a housing or land problem is a genuinely valuable structure. On the other hand, a skyscraper built purely for prestige is, well, just a very expensive mirror reflecting someone’s ambitions.

Cities that build skyscrapers thoughtfully, with sustainability, community, and human wellbeing at the center, will get the most value from going tall. Cities that build them just to impress will eventually come back down to earth. Figuratively speaking, of course.
