The first idea is the commensal scavenger theory. According to research published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science, this theory suggests wolves invaded ancient human settlements in search of animal remains and edible waste. Over time, the bolder but more tolerant wolves gained a survival advantage.

The second idea is that humans deliberately took wolf pups in as pets. Some researchers argue this fits better with what we know about how early people lived. They suggest people raised wolf pups and later bred the more tractable results for hunting, guarding, and companionship.

The third idea, somewhat different, comes from a study that looked at ice age diets. That shared meal, repeated thousands of times, could have started everything.

The timing is another thing scientists debate. Most evidence points to domestication happening somewhere between 15,000 and 40,000 years ago. Dogs, it turns out, are the only animals domesticated while humans were still purely hunter-gatherers.

Two Phases of Becoming a Dog

Scientists now believe that wolf domestication happened in two clearly separate phases. This two-phase model helps explain why the process took so long and why different breeds ended up so different from each other.

Even socialized wolves, raised alongside humans, still behave very differently from domestic dogs in many ways. The thousands of years of selective pressure have produced genuinely different animals.

Scientists still argue about the finer details of wolf domestication. And honestly, that is a good thing. It means researchers keep digging for better answers.
